BioUPP is a deeptech startup, winner of the 2024 i-Lab State Innovation Competition, wich aims to develop and industrialize biomethanation units to store renewable energy and increase biogas production while contributing to decarbonization

BioUpp has developed a patented industrial biological biomethanation technology that converts biogenic CO₂ from anaerobic digestion and green hydrogen, produced from surplus renewable electricity, into biomethane that can be injected directly into the existing gas grid.

Using selected and patented methanogenic microorganisms, our process operates at low temperatures and atmospheric pressure, providing a simpler and more cost-effective alternative to conventional catalytic processes.

Designed for retrofitting existing anaerobic digestion plants, our solution increases biomethane production by 30 to 40% without requiring additional biomass. BioUpp therefore contributes to better renewable energy valorisation, CO₂ emission reduction and enhanced energy sovereignty. Our technology also enables the production of renewable gas eligible for RFNBO (Renewable Fuel of Non-Biological Origin) status under the European regulatory framework.
