IFPEN is organizing a round table on the challenges and prospects of CO2 capture and storage. What are the objectives and solutions? At what cost and when? What is the regulatory framework?
French industry halved its greenhouse gas emissions between 1990 and 2020, thanks in particular to improvements in energy efficiency. A further effort is expected, with a further reduction of more than a third by 2030.
To reach the 2030 reduction target (from 72 MtCO2eq to 45 between 2022 and 2030), CO2 capture, storage and recovery (CCS) is a key lever. According to the IPCC and the IEA, 15% of reduction efforts will be achieved through the implementation of CCUS. This will make it possible to capture incompressible emissions from industries that are difficult to decarbonize, in particular heavy industry (iron and steel, cement, refining and chemicals).
In France, on June 23, the government presented the first guidelines of its CCUS strategy, which gives priority to the 50 industrial sites with the highest emissions.
While the scientific community, manufacturers and public authorities are mobilized to set up an industrial sector dedicated to CCUS, major challenges remain:
- What regulatory framework is needed for large-scale deployment?
- What capture technologies are needed to reduce energy costs?
- What decarbonization solutions are needed for different industrial sectors?
- What storage solutions are needed, and how can they be adopted by society?
